Cobourg Day Celebrated With 1867 Re-Enactment

On Monday, October 30, the Town of Cobourg celebrated ‘Cobourg Day’ the Town’s seventh annual celebration as part of Local Government Week.

In celebration of Canada’s 150th Cobourg Municipal Council and Town Staff re-enacted a compilation of Municipal Council meetings from 1867. Council and staff dressed in period costume and reviewed agenda items that reflected the main type of business in 1867 such as the funding and construction of the Cobourg, Peterborough and Marmora Railway, construction of a Battalion Drill Shed for accommodation of Her Majesty’s troops, construction of a Children’s Aid Refuge Home, the funding to build a new Central School and much more.

The day also included a variety of events including a local Cobourg student appointed as ‘Mayor for a Day’, free public transit, the launch of a new campaign called ‘This is Cobourg’, an awards presentation for the Communities in Bloom initiative and a special guest appearance from our Father of Confederation James Cockburn.

Beginning in 2008, Local Government Week was developed by the Province of Ontario, the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks, and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO), and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) to celebrate the key role that Ontario local governments play in helping to define the character, priorities, amenities and physical make-up of communities.

“Cobourg Day really gives us a chance to learn more about the role local government plays in all of our lives and in our community” said Mayor Gil Brocanier.

Citizens who could not make the event in person but would like to view it can access the recorded meeting on the Town of Cobourg’s YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/towncobourg
