On Friday, October 27, 2017, at about 11:08 PM, officers of the Cobourg Police service were dispatched to Northumberland Hills Hospital.

As a result of the incident, the provincial Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified, and they have invoked their mandate to investigate stated the Cobourg Police in a media release. The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency, independent of the police, that conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.

The SIU investigators reportedly arrived at the hospital just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to witnesses, the hospital was placed on lockdown after the shooting. Many other Paramedics and Police cruisers were on scene shortly after the call.

Police guarded the entrance of the hospital’s emergency room to prevent people from entering.
On Saturday morning at 7:15 AM the SIU confirmed on Twitter that one man was killed on Friday night at Northumberland Hills Hospital due to a police-related shooting. Early media reports speculated that 2 people were killed.
