Cobourg Mayor Gil Brocanier Will Retire From Politics After 21 Years

On July 3rd at the Cobourg Town Council meeting, Mayor Gil Brocanier announced that he will not be running for Mayor in the upcoming election. Brocanier leaves after 21 years in municipal politics. He will look forward to spending more time with his family and enjoying time off.

Earlier in the day, Cobourg’’s Deputy Mayor John Henderson announced he has filed his nomination papers to run for Mayor in the October municipal election.

In a media release, Henderson writes that he believes he has first-hand experience based on 23 years sitting on various town advisory committees including time as chair of the Cobourg Police Services Board, along with two council terms as Planning and Development Coordinator and most recently, as Deputy Mayor.

“Igniting economic and growth opportunities needs to be on the forefront of council’s planning. It’s paramount that outcomes identified within council’s recently adopted Strategic Plan be achieved” said Henderson.

So far there are no other candidates for Mayor, while there are five candidates for council positions. The municipal election will be held on October 22, 2018.
